The most important question we ask our customers is "Are you wearing the proper size AND width?" Often the response is "I don't know."

We know many problems women encounter are due to wearing the wrong size and/or width shoe. Poor fitting shoes cause immediate problems like discomfort, pain, blisters and pinching, but also long-term problems such as corns, bunions, hammertoes, shin splints and many more! Proper fitting footwear is crucial for so many reasons!

Most of us remember going to a shoe store and having our feet measured as a child, but it is equally as important as an adult! Chances are, your feet are not both the same size – this is actually the norm. Additionally, many women we have measured were wearing the wrong size and/or width! Many women don’t realize that what they need is a different width in their shoes, not a necessarily a different size.

The most accurate way to measure feet is with a Brannock device (pictured below). The best way to have this done is by visiting a full-service shoe retailer and having your feet professionally measured and then trying on the shoes.

We realize that online shopping presents a challenge if you don't know what size you wear. Also, different brands, whose shoes are made at different factories, may not run the same (just like clothing). Walking Cradles shoes are tested across eight different sizes and widths before production, helping us achieve consistency across styles! Once your know your proper size and width, you can then expect you will continue to select it in Walking Cradles. We offer Narrow (AA), Medium (B), Wide (D) and Wide-Wide (EE) and most styles come in sizes 4-13.

Please read our tips below and then refer to the Size Conversion Chart at the bottom of this page. These are tools to help determine the best possible fit when ordering online, but we still recommend having your feet professionally measured. Walking Cradles can be found in-store at many wonderful shoe retailers throughout the United States who are experienced in measuring feet for a perfect fit – click on our 'Find A Store' page to find a wonderful retail partner near you!

Our mantra, “It’s A Matter of Fit!” was created because our mission is to provide shoes that fit great and feel amazing! At the end of the day, if your feet aren't hurting, then you have found the right shoes!

Fitting Tips

  • We are on our feet more than half the time we are awake. Each step puts pressure equal to 3 times our body weight onto our feet – we need to protect this asset!
  • Many individuals may vary by half a size or more from their left foot to their right! If this is the case, opt to fit your larger foot. Inserts and heel cups can be found at local shoe and department stores to compensate for one shoe or the other.
  • Change up your shoes and heel heights frequently. Podiatrists recommend a heel height of 2" or less for extended lengths of time on our feet. Very high heels as well as completely flat shoes should be worn in moderation to avoid potential foot and back problems.
  • For best results when trying on new shoes, test your shoes toward the end of the day as your feet are most likely at their largest at this time.
"Do your shoes run true to size?"
Based on the standard U.S. sizing, Walking Cradles styles run true to size. All Walking Cradles styles are fit tested across 8 sizes and widths--ensuring quality, comfort and proper fit. In the rare occasion that we find a style runs a bit long, a little narrow, etc. there will be notations in the description of that particular style on our website, walkingcradles.com. If we find defects in fit or quality due to production, the style is returned to our warehouse and inspected by quality control to correct the problem and determine if we will put that shoe back into production.

"How does the industry determine size and width?"
Sizing is based on measurement from the back of your heel to the tip of your big toe. Width is determined by measuring across the widest part of your foot, typically at the ball or joint of the medial metatarsal and proximal phalanges - MTP or Metatarsal Phalangeal Joint - where the big knuckle of your big toe connects the long bones that stretch over the arch of your foot. It is important to note that depending on the shape and girth of your feet, size and width can vary; another reason why we prefer that customers have their feet measured professionally. We are periodically asked if someone can measure their own feet with a tape measure. The answer is no. This is not an effective means of foot measurement and will result in inaccurate results.

"What is the difference between a Narrow, Medium, Wide and Wide-Wide width?"
Widths increase in dimension across the top and bottom of the foot.
